Our Responsibility

Heraeus Covantics manufactures high-purity quartz glass, ceramics, and composite materials. Our manufacturing processes are energy-intensive—for example, due to the melting of quartz sand at very high temperatures. This entails a special responsibility, and we are implementing measures to use energy and resources more efficiently.

“For us, sustainability isn't a one-time task, but rather a mindset that we must bring to life every day.”

Nick Pojezny and Christoph Fark, CEOs of Heraeus Covantics

Climate Protection in Focus

As an energy-intensive company, our efforts are focused on measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our manufacturing operations at our sites. The Heraeus Group reports its greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the methodology described in the Heraeus Sustainability Report 2025 and the principles of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

  • Scope 1 and 2 – direct emissions from our production and emissions from purchased energy. We are implementing specific measures in this area (see below).
  • Scope 3 – other indirect emissions from upstream and downstream activities in the value chain.

We understand sustainability as part of the Heraeus Group’s integrated ESG agenda. This agenda is advanced across the Group; the corresponding targets and progress are reported in the Heraeus Sustainability Report.

Climate Protection: Measures to Reduce Scope 1 and 2 Emissions

We are implementing measures to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from production and energy procurement.

Renewable energy

Photovoltaic systems at our Kleinostheim, Shenyang, and Buford locations • An allocation under a solar power purchase agreement (PPA) in Germany • Additional procurement of certificates of origin (HKN) for the accounting allocation of renewable energy

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is a key component of our ISO 50001-compliant energy management system, which we implement at our locations in Germany.

Technological change

We research and test alternative manufacturing processes.
